The Montana Associated Students named University of Montana President Royce Engstrom the state's Administrator of the Year on Thursday during the Montana University System Board of Regents meeting in Havre.

The award is given annually to a higher education administrator in Montana who has gone above and beyond in service to students. Student government presidents and vice presidents from all public state universities across Montana selected Engstrom for this year's award

Associated Students of UM outgoing President Cody Meixner presented the award to Engstrom.

“Royce never makes an ill-informed decision,” Meixner said. “He has a reputation for involving every party, to the extent that he can, in all action he takes. This is exhibited most recently in his decision to include ASUM, Faculty Senate and Staff Senate leadership in his cabinet, so as to ensure that all voices are at the table when tough decisions are being made.”

Engstrom received the award for how he handled realigning UM’s workforce so that the budget reflected the institution’s current enrollment, according the university.

Named the university's president in 2010, Engstrom has overseen the implementation of a number of new programs, including the Global Leadership Initiative - a four-year fellowship that provides students unique experiences through the country.

During his tenure as UM president, he has also served on the Department of Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council, the Association of American Colleges and Universities Board of Directors, and the Northwest Commission of Colleges and Universities Board of Commissioners.
