An agent with the Transportation Security Administration who is based at Missoula International Airport is among the 17 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Missoula County, the agency has confirmed.

The agent works as a screening officer on the afternoon shift at the Missoula airport and last worked on March 25, according to TSA.

“During the course of the past two weeks, the Transportation Security Administration has seen its dedicated workforce hit by COVID-19,” the agency said. “We have seen this in the increasing number of confirmed cases, the growing number of employees who have been exposed to the virus, and in those who have chosen to self-isolate at home due to being at higher risk for contracting COVID-19 if exposed. “

Over the past 14 days, the TSA said, 58 screening officers have tested positive for COVID-19. In addition, 21 non-screening employees also have tested positive for the virus over the same period, even though they limited interaction with the traveling public.

The agency said it's working with the CDC, along with state and local health departments, to monitor local situations and to ensure the safety of its employees and the traveling public.

“We continue to see officers demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism and hard work as they report to duty to screen passengers and their belongings to help ensure the traveling public remains safe and secure during this challenging time,” the agency said. “Our goal is to enable travelers to make sound personal decisions about steps they may want to take to ensure their health and well-being as they pass through the security screening process.”
