Missoula city firefighters responded to the second house fire of the holiday weekend on Saturday.

Flames were showing through the roof of the two-story home at 2255 S. 13thSt. W. when the first engines arrived at about noon.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from two windows on the second floor as well, but everyone was out of the house and safe.

Crews entered the home and quickly gained control of the fire, according to a report from Battalion Chief Dave Wolter.

However, there was extensive damage to the second floor of the residence, Wolter said.

The initial report listed the property damage at $30,000, with another $150,000 in property saved.

In all, five engines, a command truck and a fire investigator responded from Missoula Fire. Another engine from Missoula Rural Fire also responded, as did an ambulance from Missoula Emergency Services and four Missoula police officers.

Wolter said crews remained on the scene for several hours to make sure there were no hidden extensions of the fire and to complete their operations.

There was no immediate determination of the fire’s cause.

Wolter reminded residents to be certain they have a working smoke detector and a fire extinguisher in their homes.

Saturday’s fire came less than 48 hours after a home on Burlington Avenue was damaged on Thanksgiving night.

Smoke was pouring from that home when firefighters arrived. Damage in that incident was estimated at $50,000.
