WASHINGTON (CN) – Democrats on a powerful House panel plan to look into Ivanka Trump’s use of a personal email account to conduct White House business, The Hill reported on Tuesday.

Citing a Democratic aide, The Hill’s report says the House Committee on  Oversight and Government Reform will soon look into whether Trump, an adviser to President Donald Trump, violated two federal laws by reportedly using a personal email account for official White House business.

The report comes a day after the Washington Post broke the news that Trump used a personal email to send “hundreds of emails” to aides in the White House and officials in the Trump administration in 2017. Fewer than 100 of those emails were about official business, with many more related to scheduling.

The Post reported Trump has told White House attorneys she was not aware she was breaking rules with her email habits. Trump’s use of a private account first came to light last year, but Monday’s report further details its scope.

With Democrats poised to take the majority in the House and the gavels on the chamber’s committees when the calendar shifts to 2019, Trump’s email use figures to draw scrutiny. The House Oversight Committee, led by Maryland Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings, will likely be a centerpiece of Democrats’ investigations into the Trump administration.

Trump’s email use is sure to draw particularly scrutiny due to President Trump’s focus during the 2016 presidential election on Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.

In a statement Tuesday, Cummings noted the Oversight Committee began an investigation into the use of private email at the White House last year, but that lawmakers did not receive all of the documents they requested in the probe.

“We need those documents to ensure that Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner and others are complying with federal records laws and there is a complete record of the activities of this administration,” Cummings said in a statement. “My goal is to prevent this from happening again – not to turn this into a spectacle the way Republicans went after Hillary Clinton. My main priority as chairman will be to focus on the issues that impact Americans in their everyday lives.”

The White House also did not return a request for comment on the report.
