Missoula County Public Schools ask voters to approve 2 operation levies

(KPAX) Missoula County Public School Trustees have approved two operation levies to appear on the May 7 ballot.

The elementary operation levy request is $200,519 while the high school operation levy request is $118,986.

Operation levies help schools fund operational expenditures and pay for utilities, supplies, and curriculum and teaching materials.

MCPS officials state that operations levies represent a 20 percent investment in their maximum budget.

This additional 20 percent allows the district to sustain the current level of staffing and programs, it said.

“We have seen steady increases in student enrollment and in the cost of goods and services,” noted Superintendent Mark Thane. “We have over 650 more students in our elementary and middle schools than we did nine years ago.”

“And our enrollment in the high schools has grown by more than 100 students in the past three years. These levies help us support additional students and keep up with inflation,” he added.

This is an all-mail election, which will include the levies and five trustee seats up for re-election.  Ballots will be mailed on April 17 and must be returned on or before Tuesday, May 7, 2019.
