In their own words: Black Lives Matter protesters, counter protesters speak their mind

Editor’s note: Interview excerpts included in this outtake contain raw language.

Tensions were high when a group of young men showed up at a Black Lives Matter protest in downtown Missoula waving Trump banners and the confederate flag, rifles slung over their shoulders.

But what could have escalated into confrontation and violence on Thursday night prompted a conversation, leading to what Black Lives Matter protest leaders described as “cooperation” and “mutual respect” between opposing sides.

The two sides don’t agree politically and they each share different points of view. Here are some of their thoughts and views in their own words.

The photos don’t reflect who’s speaking. Many weren’t willing to give their names. The accompanying story can be found at this link.
