(KPAX) The Northern Cheyenne Tribe made history Tuesday by electing women for all of its open tribal council seats.

The eastern Montana tribe held its election on Tuesday.

Of the five open seats on the tribal council, along with the tribal president and vice president, all winners were women.

Donna Marie Fisher defeated Gene Small in the race for tribal president by 283 votes.

Sheldon King went down in defeat to Serena Brady Wetherelt, 819 to 548.

Melissa Rae Fisher was elected by voters to fill the seat in Ashland’s tribal council district.

Gwen Talawyma will serve the Birney District.

The Busby seat will be filled by Norma Gourneau.

Silver Little Eagle was elected to fill the Lame Deer seat.

Incumbent Debra Waters Charette will serve another term for the Muddy district.

The tribe has a total of 10 council seats for five different districts across the reservation.

Once the newly elected council members are sworn in, all but three will be female.

The term for the five other seats that were not up for a vote on Tuesday will expire in 2022.
