A film produced in Missoula and Helena won several awards over the weekend at the Flathead Lake International Cinemafest, including best actor and honorable mention for best feature.

“What Separates Us,” directed by Bryan Ferriter who also stars in the film, recently screened at film festivals in Portland and Los Angeles, and won best feature at the Machetanz Film Festival in Alaska.

The movie will show at the Roxy in Missoula next month to kick off the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival.

The film marks the third collaboration between Ferriter, a Helena native, and producer Isaac Marble, a Red Lodge native. The filmmakers have collaborated on recent independent films, including “Crimson Winter” and the comedy, “My Favorite Movie.”

Ferriter described “What Separates Us” as a coming-of-age drama that follows the complexities of the relationship between a small-town dishwasher with big aspirations and a beautiful West Coast art student who is new to Montana.

“A fallen track star, the only running he does is from himself, living for his friends and the whiskey fueled rush of a midday brawl,” the synopsis reads. “His fortunes change when he meets Parker, a passionate art student who attends the local university. Their relationship changes his world and Danny is forced to weigh the balance between his support system and the pursuit of his dreams.”

The film will screen at the Roxy on Feb. 15 and 16.
