Letters: Bullock will help reform flawed healthcare system

I see Sen. Steve Daines is running a TV ad once again saying how he will protect people with pre-existing conditions. As the parent of a little girl with a rare, life-threatening lung disease, I cringe when I see this ad.

Why? Because it couldn’t be further from the truth. For years, Senator Steve Daines has been on the front lines of efforts out of Washington to gut healthcare for people with pre-existing conditions, including my daughter and 152,000 others right here in Montana.

For families like mine, it is very hard to trust Senator Daines at his word on pre-existing conditions. This is because Senator Daines has voted repeatedly to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and to gut the provision that prohibits insurance companies from hiking prices simply because of pre-existing conditions like the one my daughter has.

When those efforts failed because of widespread opposition in Montana, Daines shifted gears and is now supporting a lawsuit looking to strike down the ACA in the courts. Senator Daines has repeatedly stood in the way of even modest reforms to our healthcare system. He votes to protect profits for the healthcare industry, rather than people like my daughter.

Our healthcare system in the U.S. has been flawed for decades, and families like mine pay the price. I encourage my fellow Montanans to join me in electing a Senator who will increase access to affordable healthcare, not do everything possible to undermine it. That is Governor Steve Bullock.
