Named after Elon Musk’s federal DOGE efforts, Idaho lawmakers are looking for cuts to recommend for 2026 legislative session.

Though billionaire Elon Musk led DOGE's mass firings and ran roughshod over wide swaths of the federal government, little is known about the department's structure or the personnel running its operations.

He dramatically reduced his target for cutting spending — from $2 trillion to $1 trillion to $150 billion — and increasingly expressed frustration about resistance to his goals.

Library directors write, "On March 31, the Department of Government Efficiency, by orders of the administration, shuttered the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS), likely eliminating a critical funding source for libraries nationwide."

The former superintendents of Yellowstone, Rushmore, Badlands national parks say DOGE wiped out a generation of leaders.
