Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen says his office won’t negotiate with the city of Helena, as they consider whether to adopt a new resolution on immigration enforcement.
On the advice of legal counsel and possibly in the face of steep financial losses, the Helena City Commission rescinded an immigration resolution on Thursday night in a special meeting at the city’s Civic Center.
Gov. Greg Gianforte said the resolution is “potentially a direct violation” of a law he signed in 2021 prohibiting local governments from creating sanctuary cities in the state.
The Poor Farm in the 1800s housed the elderly who had no one to care for them, people who were disabled and unable to work, and orphaned or abandoned children.
