Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen says his office won’t negotiate with the city of Helena, as they consider whether to adopt a new resolution on immigration enforcement.

On the advice of legal counsel and possibly in the face of steep financial losses, the Helena City Commission rescinded an immigration resolution on Thursday night in a special meeting at the city’s Civic Center.

Knudsen calls resolution a ‘blatant violation’ of the state’s ban on sanctuary cities, Helena must change course.

The League of Cities and Towns say the state has made “constant and determined” efforts to undercut their power for six years.

Gov. Greg Gianforte said the resolution is “potentially a direct violation” of a law he signed in 2021 prohibiting local governments from creating sanctuary cities in the state.
