Missoula County this month launched a dispute with the state agency, saying that it's using local jails to house its own inmates and not funding the full cost of doing so.
Options include building more capacity at the Montana State Prison, building a new women’s prison, and possibly putting more inmates at contracted prisons like the Saguaro Correction Center in Arizona.
The state remains over its prison capacity, with a population of 2,841 across all facilities in Montana as of Wednesday that only have a full total operational capacity of 2,739.
A Missoula man will spend the next 12 years in prison for paying teenage girls as young as 14 years-old to have intercourse, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Friday.
People who are incarcerated at the Montana State Prison have heat again after a system breakdown last week left 51 inmates without it, according to a Department of Corrections press release late Wednesday.
The prison would partner with local animal shelters to get rowdy or nervous dogs ready for adoption and give inmates some time to relax and work with the animals.
