While the city and the Poverello Center have turned an eye toward making changes to Missoula's homeless services, keeping the Johnson Street shelter open for another two years remains the top priority – for now.
The range of programs aided by the funding include the Poverello's veterans program, food services and shelter operations. It also supports the Homeless Outreach Team, which has more than doubled over the past five years.
The Poverello board writes, "In September, we opened the Johnson Street Shelter. We know the building, location, and timing aren’t ideal. However, the team at The Pov is doing its best to serve a population with complex needs and limited resources."
Work to convert an old West Broadway motel into transitional housing for homeless veterans will receive an $833,000 funding boost from Missoula County, which is helping cover some of project's construction and design costs.
