The Supreme Court cleared the way for a looming ban on TikTok Friday, upholding lawmakers’ strong-arm tactics against the popular social platform’s Chinese ownership.
Currently, there are two lawsuits that are challenging Senate Bill 419, which bans TikTok from Montana beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, and fines any company who allows the app to be downloaded as much as $10,000 per download.
The plaintiffs want a federal judge to declare the ban invalid and to permanently bar the state from enforcing it. They are represented by Natasha Prinzing Jones and Matthew Hayhurst with Boone Karlberg in Missoula.
Colorado leaders continue to push for greater regulation of the social media app TikTok because of what they say are the threats it poses to national security, as well as young people’s mental health.
The bill would prohibit internet service providers or any other company from allowing anyone within Montana’s borders access to the app TikTok under the threat of major penalty.
