Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Montana gas prices are on the rise again after back-to-back weeks of slight drops. Patrick De Haan is the head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, and he provided the current numbers.

“Average gasoline prices in Montana have risen 8.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.31 per gallon today,” De Haan said. “Prices in Montana are 22.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.08 per gallon higher than a year ago."

As of Monday morning, the two stations at the corner of Reserve and Mullan in Missoula were charging $4.19. The two stations at the corner of Reserve and South were charging $4.26 and $4.29. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Montana was priced at $3.99 per gallon yesterday, while the most expensive was $5.09 per gallon.

Montana is currently ranked 9th in the U.S. when it comes to the average price of gas, which is one spot lower than last week.

"The national average price of gasoline has risen 7.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.02 per gallon today,” De Haan said. “The national average is up 3.6 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 93.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 14.3 cents compared to a week ago and stands at $5.42 per gallon.”

De Haan said rebounding oil prices driven by the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries kept upward pressure on the market.

"Diesel felt the pressure even more acutely, rising in all but a few states, as Ukraine's attacks on Russian refining infrastructure continue to impact refined product prices more than crude oil itself," De Haan said. "While the seasonal transition to cheaper winter-blend gasoline in the coming month could bring some relief, the two dominant challenges facing motorists— the closed Strait and the ongoing refinery strikes— show no signs of resolving anytime soon. Until they do, the path for gas and diesel prices remains tilted to the upside."

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
