A day after her coach predicted she was on the verge of a breakout in the hammer throw, Hana Feilzer delivered with another school-record effort on Friday evening as the Mountain States Games got underway at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho.

Feilzer and Sammy Evans, in the long jump, had first-place performances at the venue that will host the Big Sky Conference indoor championships in two weeks.

In five meets this winter, dating back to Eastern Washington's Candy Cane Invitational in early December, Feilzer four times had throws in the 15-inch landing zone between 59-3 and 60-6.

On Thursday, coach Brian Schweyen predicted Feilzer was ready to snap out of that routine, which had her ranked third in the Big Sky.

Throwing in a field of more than 30, Feilzer blew away the competition, going 62-10.75 to add more than two feet to her school record, move up to second on the Big Sky performance list and out-throw her Mountain States Games competition by nearly five feet.

And closed the gap on Northern Arizona's Brooke Andersen, who leads the Big Sky at 68-5.75, which she threw last Friday in Flagstaff.

The other winner for Montana on Friday evening, which featured a number of preliminary races on the track, a handful of distance events and half of the meet's field competitions, was Evans in the long jump.

Evans went 18-11, her best jump since the Candy Cane Invitational. Erika McLeod was third in the event, going 18-5.25.

Montana's distance medley relay team of Maddie NagleMegan FranzRosa Hardarson and Emily Pittis finished second in a time of 12:05.23.

On the men's side, Nick Jackson placed fifth in the shot put at 52-11, Kyle Morris was sixth at a season-best 52-4.25.

Brendan Thurber-Blaser finished fifth in the long jump at a season-best 22-1, Grant Whitcutt tied for fifth in the high jump at 6-2.75, and the distance medley relay team of Paden AlexanderEmmette DustybullKarsten Pease and Nathan Wellington placed fifth.

Results of the preliminaries in the 60 and 200 meters, and the 60-meter hurdles were not made available.
