A 0.5% sales tax increase in Utah’s capital is just one step away from becoming official after the Salt Lake City Council unanimously approved a final deal with Smith Entertainment Group.
Downtown Salt Lake City is poised to reach record heights with a new zone drafted specifically for the so-called Revitalization Zone, the area that’s set to house a renovated Delta Center and a sports and entertainment district.
The group is seeking the Salt Lake City Council’s approval of a 0.5% sales tax increase to raise about $900 million to fund part of renovations for the Delta Center to host a National Hockey League team, and the redevelopment of three downtown blocks.
Many of the Salt Lakers who flooded the City Council chambers to share public comment may not be totally opposed to a downtown revitalization zone surrounding a sports arena to host the state’s professional basketball and soon-to-be hockey teams.
The tunnel’s price tag was about $80 million and about $5.5 million went to the art installation. Though the corridor is almost done, its link to Concourse B is not ready yet, but will be on Oct. 22.
