Viewpoint: City Council candidate lobbies for more oversight

Missoula prides itself on community, yet too many neighbors live in housing that’s unsafe, unstable, or unfairly managed. If elected to City Council, I’m committed to advancing five practical, proven policies that will bring greater accountability to our rental market and peace of mind to those who call Missoula home.

First, I’ll advocate for landlord registration laws at the state level. Current law prevents cities from requiring registration, something that would improve safety and accountability. I’ll work with lawmakers to change that. Second, we need mandatory disclosure ordinances.

Renters deserve clear, written notice about fees, pests, mold, or lead hazards, along with a summary of their rights under Montana law. Transparency is essential. Third, we must strengthen housing code enforcement. Our inspection system is a start, but without more staffing or resources, it falls short. No one should wait weeks for help in an unsafe home.

Fourth, I’ll advocate for legal aid and tenant education. Missoula should partner with legal clinics and nonprofits to inform renters about eviction, discrimination, and fair housing rights. Lastly, let’s implement just cause protections for city-funded or subsidized developments. Public dollars should never support no-fault evictions.

These are practical reforms, not partisan ones. They reflect Missoula values: fairness, safety, and dignity in housing. Renters are vital members of our community—teachers, service workers, students, and seniors. They deserve a city that works for them.
