A new warehouse offering flexible space is under construction near the airport, marking the first phase of a project expected to help meet Missoula's shortage of light industrial space.

Brian Morgan announced the multi-million dollar project last year, saying it will involve several phases and eventually include multiple units.

Commercial real estate agents believe the project will help address the growing demand for industrial warehouse space in Missoula.

“With the lack of available warehouse space in Missoula, we figure this will be a hot commodity,” said Claire Matten with Sterling CRE Advisors in Missoula.

Sterling touched on the warehouse and a number of other projects unfolding around the city this month, including a move by Mismo Gymnastics to a new location on Benton Avenue, along with new additions to Southgate Mall.

The old JCPenny location is being renovated to house the new SCHEELS sporting goods store, which is slated to open next year.

“The entire southwest corner of the mall where (JCPenny) used to live is sectioned off with construction underway,” said Matt Mellott with Sterling.

The Missoula Housing Authority last year also announced its plans to construct a 12-unit apartment complex for “critically needy” residents.

The project is under construction on Great Northern Loop and Mullan Road and will serve the literally homeless who have the highest needs for permanent supportive housing.

“Housing will be available to people who are struggling with issues of addiction and mental illness- factors that might be barriers to otherwise gaining housing,” said Matten.
